Senior and Veterans Resources, Denton County

It is difficult to make decisions in moments of stress and crisis of loved one. We have compiled a list of senior resources, available in Denton County, that you may find helpful.

About 40 years ago, a group of people in Denton County got together and asked themselves how to help seniors in the county remain in their own homes, happy and healthy, for as long as possible. Span Inc. is the result of their efforts. Span Inc. It is a 501©3 non-profit established in 1974.

  1. Meals on Wheels: To receive meals, one must be 60 years or older, genuinely home bound by reason of physical or emotional health, unable to prepare meals for themselves with no one living with them able to cook for them and be home to receive meals.
  2. Congregate Meals: For individuals 60 and older, this service provides lunch time meals and the opportunity to enjoy the company of peers at various locations around the county. Use contact information below for Meals on Wheels to find locations and times for congregate meals. Apply to Span to get your application approved.
  3. Transportation: Span transportation is a fare based, demand response service providing mobility solutions for elderly citizens, individuals with disabilities and the general public in Denton County. Vehicles are equipped with wheelchair lifts and drivers are trained to assist individuals with mobility impairments or who use assistive devices. Fares are $3 each way for disabled or senior guests and $6 each way for general public.
  4. Veterans Services: Span Transit provides transportation to the Dallas and Fort Veterans Administraion Medical Centers for our Denton County Vets. Trips to the VA Centers are of no cost to Veterans. They offer local pickup at centralized locations throughout the county plus home pickup for veterans with qualifying disability. Spouses and caregivers may also ride for free.
  5. Senior Paws: The goal of senior paws is to support the pets of the Meals on Wheels clients by providing monthly pet food delivery. This helps ensure that seniors don’t have to share their meals with pets because they can’t afford pet supplies or are unable to drive to purchase pet food. They realize the importance of pets in the lives of seniors.
